How to find out VMWARE Host name from guest machine August 20, 2009

I came up with a problem on how to determine the VMWARE host that hosted my virtual machine so that I can physically back it up.  The challenge is that we have 50 of those hosts.  I can login remotely to the virtual machine via RDP. So after some registry lurking in the hosted virtual machine, I found out that you can find the name of the VMWare Host in:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Virtual Machine\Guest\Parameters\PhysicalHostName

That key doesn’t exist on a ESXi Guest machine.

This was working in an older version (e.g. year 2008) of ESX hosting Windows Server 2003. This might not be working on the newer versions and with Windows Server 2008.
